Bakery management should weigh the risks vs. the rewards of performing random testing and determine if random testing is an essential part of its strategy to combat drug use in the workplace or if reasonable suspicion testing can accomplish the same goal. Any bakery that elects to conduct random testing must understand that random drug testing applies to all employees except those employees subject to random testing under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations or in states where random drug testing is not permitted. Random means exactly that – random. The HRBP is responsible for alternating testing dates, (i.e., not the 2 nd Tuesday of every month), ensuring a random sampling, and coordinating the random tests.
